Flimnap had always been my secret enemy. He told the Emperor that his Treasury was poor and that I had cost them over a million and a half sprugs (their greatest gold coin). He advised the Emperor to get rid of me as soon as possible.

I am here obliged (на мне лежит обязанность: «тут я обязан») to save the reputation of an excellent lady (защитить честь одной достойной дамы; to save — спасать; охранять, защищать; excellent — превосходный; обладающий положительными качествами). Flimnap, the Treasurer, was jealous (был ревнив). Before I tell you (прежде чем рассказать вам) how I left the Kingdom of Lilliput (каким образом я оставил королевство/государство Лилипутию), I would like to tell you about a secret plot (я хотел бы рассказать о тайном заговоре) that had been made against me (который был устроен против меня).

I had never known much about life at Court (я никогда не был особенно знаком с придворной жизнью: «не знал много о…»). Before I tell you how I left the Kingdom of Lilliput, I would like to tell you about a secret plot that had been made against me.

Of course I had heard and read about princes and ministers, but I had never expected to find that I, myself, was part of an intrigue at Court or that this would take place in such a far-off country, with rules that are so different from those in Europe.

I was preparing for my visit to the Emperor of Blefuscu (я готовился отправится с визитом к императору Блефуску) when an important person at Court came, very privately, to my house one night (когда однажды ночью, совершенно тайно, в мой дом прибыл один важный придворный).

I placed his chair on the table, as I usually did (я поставил, как обычно /это/ делал, его кресло на стол), and sat down at the table (и /сам/ сел рядом: «к столу»). As soon as we greeted each other (как только = едва мы обменялись приветствиями: «поприветствовали друг друга»; soon — скоро) I noticed that he looked very worried (я заметил, что он выглядел весьма озабоченным), and I asked him why this was so (и спросил его о причине этого: «почему это было так»). He asked me to listen patiently to something (он попросил меня терпеливо выслушать нечто) that concerned my honour and my life (что касалось моей чести и жизни).
