Химическая зависимость подразумевает привыкание к веществам, изменяющим сознание, в т.ч. к алкоголю. Существует общий, основной синдром зависимости, или привыкания, но каждая группа веществ имеет свои характерные особенности, проявляющиеся в состоянии интоксикации и после прекращения употребления, и эти особенности требуют изучения. Приведенные ниже работы помогут понять сходства и различия между такими веществами. В них описываются одни и те же биологические, психологические и социальные факторы заболеваний зависимости. Даётся обзор последних исследований эндорфинов и энкефолинов и их роли в болезни зависимости.
