Стоимость денег, как известно, трудно оценить, и современные эквиваленты, как правило, вводят в заблуждение. Доходы были более стабильны, чем цены на товары, и являются лучшим ориентиром. В XV веке годовой доход большинства английских приходских священников составлял от 5 до 10 фунтов стерлингов. Приблизительно сопоставимым был доход лучника, находящегося на постоянной службе, — 9 фунтов стерлингов в год. Средний доход рыцаря, судя по декларациям о доходах 1436 г., составлял около 60 фунтов стерлингов в год. В среднем пэр Парламента задекларировал в том же году облагаемый налогом доход от земель и ренты в размере около 865 фунтов стерлингов, что было достаточно для содержания дома из нескольких десятков слуг и домашней прислуги. Самый богатый человек в Англии, Ричард, герцог Йорк, утверждал, что его доход составляет 3.230 фунтов стерлингов в год. В качестве очень грубого ориентира можно умножить стоимость, выраженную в фунтах стерлингов, на 3.000, чтобы получить приблизительный современный (2022 г.) эквивалент.
