About half-way to the steep summit the trees fell away and a hard saddle of rock spread itself over the diamond beneath. Just before he reached this point he slowed down his pace, warned by an animal sense that there was life just ahead of him. Coming to a high boulder, he lifted his head gradually above its edge. His curiosity was rewarded; this is what he saw:

The figure on the saddle of rock began to speak ponderously and with an inextinguishable pride (фигурка на каменной седловине заговорила, весомо и с неугасимой гордостью; ponderous — тяжеловесный, тяжелый, увесистый; громоздкий; to extinguish — гасить, тушить).

"You out there —" he cried in a trembling voice (ты, там!.. — крикнул он дребезжащим голосом). "You — there —!" He paused, his arms still uplifted (помедлил со все еще поднятыми вверх руками), his head held attentively (запрокинув с вниманием голову; to hold — держать, удерживать) as though he were expecting an answer (словно ожидая ответа). John strained his eyes to see (напрягал глаза = зрение, чтобы увидеть) whether there might be men coming down the mountain (не спускаются ли с горы люди), but the mountain was bare of human life (но гора была лишена /признаков/ человеческой жизни; bare — голый, нагой; пустой; лишенный /чего-л./). The voice was become strong and confident (голос сделался сильным и уверенным). This was no forlorn supplication (это не была мольба несчастного; forlorn — несчастный; покинутый; жалкий, заброшенный). If anything, there was in it a quality of monstrous condescension (скорее наоборот, в нем было = слышалось гигантское снисхождение).

"You there —"

Words, too quickly uttered to be understood (слова, произносимые слишком быстро, для того чтобы их можно было понять), flowing one into the other…(перетекающие одно в другое…). John listened breathlessly (слушал, затаив дыхание; breath — дыхание), catching a phrase here and there (улавливая время от времени какую-нибудь фразу), while the voice broke off, resumed, broke off again (а голос прерывался, звучал снова, опять обрывался; to break off — отламываться; прекращаться) — now strong and argumentative (то сильный и убеждающий; argumentative — любящий спорить; приводящий аргументацию, доводы), now colored with a slow, puzzled impatience (то окрашенный непонимающим, озадаченным нетерпением). Then a conviction commenced to dawn on the single listener (и тут в единственном слушателе забрезжила догадка; conviction — убежденность, твердая вера), and as realization crept over him (и когда осознание захватило его; to creep — ползти; красться; подкрадываться; охватывать, овладевать /об ощущениях/) a spray of quick blood rushed through his arteries (волна стремительной крови пронеслась по его артериям; spray — брызганье; всплеск; струя пара или распыленной жидкость). Braddock Washington was offering a bribe to God (предлагал взятку Богу)!
