Впрочем, говоря об однозначности тогдашнего видения, я не имею в виду договоренности. В отношении почти всего российского XVIII в. мы имеем дело со спецификой восприятия иконического знака группности в условиях отсутствия готовых языковых конвенций для выражения смыслов, в нем заложенных. Современному зрителю такое восприятие, наверное, в принципе недоступно. По всей видимости, оно исчезло уже в конце XVIII в., когда процессы европеизации и графическая демонстрация российской гетерогенности проблематизировали данную тему и, как следствие, перевели ее в текстоцентричный регистр обсуждения. Вторжение в зрительское восприятие вербальных комментариев автора и издателей (описание изображения, помещение его в зависимость от всего контекста издания, участие лингвистических элементов в художественной композиции) создало полифонию смыслов и поставило художественный образ в зависимость от слова. В результате индивидуальное творчество (художника костюмов и нескольких людей, к тому сопричастных) сменилось коллективным характером сотворения народов для империи (в этом приняли участие люди власти, художники, граверы, ученые, издатели, продавцы и покупатели картинок).
Дискуссия о художественном каноне стала первой артикуляцией различных видений национального и первым столкновением раннего романтизма и просвещенческой парадигмы. Она поставила задачу принятия конвенций видения, обсуждения данной темы и поиска новых, более нормативных языков для описания империи.
