I pray you to listen (умоляю вас выслушать). For God’s sake come and listen (ради Бога, подойдите к телефону и выслушайте).’

The chaplain hesitated a moment (священник мгновение колебался).

‘As you will (как хотите),’ he said.

He took up the receiver and put it to his ear (он взял трубку и поднес к уху).

‘I am Mr Dawkins (я мистер Докинс),’ he said.

He waited (он подождал).

‘I can hear nothing whatever,’ he said at length (я совсем ничего не слышу, – наконец сказал он; whatever – какой бы то ни было, любой). ‘Ah, there was something there (а, вот что-то). The faintest whisper (очень слабый шепот).’

‘Ah, try to hear, try to hear (ах, попытайтесь расслышать, попытайтесь расслышать)!’ said the doctor.

The chaplain hesitated a moment.

‘Ah, try to hear, try to hear!’ said the doctor.

Dr Teesdale took up the receiver (доктор Тисдейл поднял трубку).

‘I am Dr Teesdale (это доктор Тисдейл),’ he said. ‘Can you give Mr Dawkins some sign that it is you (можете вы как-то доказать: «можете вы подать какой-то знак» мистеру Докинсу, что это вы)?’

Then he laid it down again (затем он опять ее положил).

‘He says he thinks he can (он говорит, что, кажется: «он думает», может),’ he said. ‘We must wait (нам надо подождать).’

The evening was again very warm, and the window into the paved yard at the back of the house was open (вечер опять был очень теплым, и окно на вымощенный задний двор дома было открыто; back – тыльная часть, задняя часть). For five minutes or so the two men stood in silence, waiting, and nothing happened (на протяжении примерно пяти минут эти двое стояли молча, ожидая, и ничего не произошло). Then the chaplain spoke (затем заговорил священник).

‘I think that is sufficiently conclusive (я думаю, что теперь все достаточно понятно; conclusive – убедительный; подводящий итог, определяющий; to conclude – завершить, закончить; сделать вывод, подвести итог),’ he said.

 Again the chaplain listened. Suddenly he laid the instrument down, frowning.

‘Something – somebody said, “I killed her, I confess it. I want to be forgiven.” It’s a hoax, my dear Teesdale. Somebody knowing your spiritualistic leanings is playing a very grim joke on you. I can’t believe it.’

Dr Teesdale took up the receiver.

‘I am Dr Teesdale,’ he said. ‘Can you give Mr Dawkins some sign that it is you?’

Then he laid it down again.

‘He says he thinks he can,’ he said. ‘We must wait.’

Even as he spoke a very cold draught of air suddenly blew into the room (как раз когда он говорил, очень холодный порыв ветра внезапно прошелся по комнате; draught – сквозняк; air – воздух; to blow – дуть), making the papers on the desk rustle (заставив бумаги на столе зашуршать). Dr Teesdale went to the window and closed it (доктор Тисдейл подошел к окну и закрыл его).
