Then the three sank panting into their chairs (затем все трое, тяжело дыша, упали в кресла; to sink – тонуть; погружаться; оседать) and looked with eyes of horror upon each other (и посмотрели друг на друга глазами, полными ужаса). The same word was in the mind of each (одно и то же слово было на уме у каждого /из них/), but Galloway was the first to speak it (но Гэллоуэй первым произнес его).

“A leper!” he cried (прокаженная! – крикнул он). “She has us all, curse her (она всех нас заразила, будь она проклята; to have – иметь; поставить в невыгодное, проигрышное положение /разг./)!”

“Not me,” said the surgeon; “she never laid her finger on me (меня нет, – сказал врач, – она даже пальцем меня не коснулась; to lay – класть).”
