"Look (смотри)," he said; "what is this (что это)?" and he pointed to the mark of a great snake tattooed in blue round his middle (и он указал на знак великой змеи, вытатуированный синей /краской/ вокруг его стана), its tail disappearing in its open mouth just above where the thighs are set into the body (хвост /змеи/ исчезал в ее же открытой пасти, как раз над бедрами: «над тем местом, где бедра переходят в тело»; to set— ставить, помещать; помещаться, располагаться).

Rise; I am not yet the king (встань, пока я еще не король), but with thy help, and with the help of these brave white men, who are my friends, I shall be (но с твоей помощью, и с помощью этих храбрых белых людей, которые мои друзья, я им стану). But the old woman Gagool was right (но старуха Гагула была права); the land shall run with blood first (сперва земля обагрится кровью; torun— бежать; литься, течь), and hers shall run with it (и ее кровь прольется /вместе с этой кровью/), for she killed my father with her words (потому что она убила моего отца своими словами), and drove my mother forth (и прогнала мою мать прочь; to drive— везти, перевозить; гнать). And now, Infadoos, choose thou (а теперь, Инфадус, тебе выбирать). Wilt thou put thy hands between my hands and be my man (захочешь ли ты вложить свои руки в мои и стать моим человеком = стать на мою сторону)? Wilt thou share the dangers that lie before me (разделишь ли ты опасности, что ожидают меня: «лежат предо мной»; share— доля, часть; to share— делить, распределять; разделить /горе, радость и т. п./; to lie before— предстоять в будущем), and help me to overthrow this tyrant and murderer, or wilt thou not (и поможешь ли ты мне свергнуть этого тирана и убийцу, или нет; to over throw— бросать слишком далеко, перебрасывать; свергать, низвергать)? Choose thou (/что/ ты выберешь)?"

"Ignosi, rightful king of the Kukuanas (Игнози, законный король Страны кукуанов), I put my hand between thy hands (я вложу свою руку в твои руки: «между твоих рук»), and am thy man till death (и буду твоим слугой до самой смерти). When thou wast a babe I dandled thee upon my knee (когда ты был ребенком, я качал тебя на /своем/ колене; thou wast = you was; to dandle — качать на руках или на коленях/ребенка/); now shall my old arm strike for thee and freedom (а теперь моя старая рука будет сражаться за тебя и за свободу; to strike — ударять, наносить удар)."

The old man put his hand to his head and thought. Then he rose, and, advancing to where Umbopa, or rather Ignosi stood, knelt before him and took his hand.

"Ignosi, rightful king of the Kukuanas, I put my hand between thy hands, and am thy man till death. When thou wast a babe I dandled thee upon my knee; now shall my old arm strike for thee and freedom."

"It is well, Infadoos (отлично, Инфадус), if I conquer, thou shalt be the greatest man in the kingdom after the king (если я одержу победу, ты будешь самым главным человеком в государстве после короля; to conquer — завоевывать, покорять; побеждать, одерживать победу/силой оружия/). If I fail, thou canst only die (если я потерплю поражение, то тебе всего лишь придется умереть: «мы сможешь только умереть»; to fail— недоставать, не хватать; потерпеть неудачу; не иметь успеха; thou canst= you can), and death is not far off for thee (а смерть для тебя и так недалеко). Rise, my uncle (встань, дядя).

"And ye, white men, will ye help me (а вы, белые люди, поможете ли вы мне)? What have I to offer ye (что я могу предложить вам)! The white stones (те прозрачные камни; white— белый; прозрачный, бесцветный), if I conquer and you can find them (если я одержу победу, а вы сможете их найти), ye shall have as many as ye can carry hence (то вы заберете их столько, сколько сможете унести с собой). Will that suffice ye (будет ли вам этого достаточно; to suffice— быть достаточным, хватать)?" I translated this remark (я перевел это его высказывание).
