"How dost thou know that I am not the equal of the inkoosi I serve?" he said. "He is of a royal house, no doubt; one can see it in his size and in his eye; so, mayhap, am I. At least I am as great a man. Be my mouth, oh, Macumazahn, and say my words to the inkoosi Incubu, my master, for I would speak to him and to thee."

I was angry with the man (я был рассержен на него), for I am not accustomed to be talked to in that way by Kaffirs (потому что я не привык, чтобы кафры разговаривали со мной в такой манере) but somehow he impressed me (но, так или иначе, он произвел на меня впечатление; to impress — клеймить, штемпелевать; производить впечатление, поражать), and besides I was curious to know what he had to say (и, кроме того, мне было любопытно узнать, что он хотел сказать), so I translated, expressing my opinion at the same time (поэтому я перевел /его слова сэру Генри/, выразив, в то же время, свое мнение) that he was an impudent fellow, and that his swagger was outrageous (что он = Амбопа был наглецом, и что его развязность была возмутительной; impudent — бесстыдный; дерзкий, наглый; swagger — чванливая и самодовольная манера держаться, походка и т.п.; развязность; outrageous — жестокий, неистовый; возмутительный; оскорбительный).

I was angry with the man, for I am not accustomed to be talked to in that way by Kaffirs but somehow he impressed me, and besides I was curious to know what he had to say, so I translated, expressing my opinion at the same time that he was an impudent fellow, and that his swagger was outrageous.

"Yes, Umbopa," answered Sir Henry, "I would journey there (я отправляюсь туда)."

I translated again (я снова перевел).

"Tell him (скажи ему)," answered Sir Henry, "that I go because I believe that a man of my blood, my brother, has gone there before me (что я иду потому, что верю, что один человек одной со мной крови: «моей крови», мой брат, отправился туда до меня), and I go to seek him (и я иду, чтобы отыскать его)."

"How do you know it was my brother (откуда ты знаешь, что это был мой брат)?" asked Sir Henry.

"Nay, I know not (нет, я этого не знаю). But the man, when I asked what the white man was like, said (но тот человек, когда я спросил его, как выглядел тот белый мужчина, сказал; like— подобный, похожий; ср.: what is he like? — как он выглядит?) that he had your eyes and a black beard (что у него были твои глаза и черная борода). "There is no doubt about it (/теперь/ в этом нет никакого сомнения)," said I; "I knew Jim well (я хорошо знал Джима)."

"There is no doubt about it," said I; "I knew Jim well."
