Муссолини никогда не интересовался подробностями сражения, как это делал Гитлер, но он с успехом возложил на себя должность верховного итальянского командующего, провозгласив себя, с одобрения короля, маршалом империи и вынудив Виктора – Эммануила предоставить ему командование всеми вооруженными силами. Генеральный штаб вооруженных сил, известный как Comando Supremo, после отставки маршала Бадольо в 1941 году расширился и превратился в организацию, которая не только руководила Итальянскими театрами военных действий, но и была органом связи с немцами.
