One day (однажды), when he returned to his teepee from a long wandering (когда он вернулся в свой вигвам из далекого путешествия; to wander — бродить, странствовать, скитаться; teepee, tepee — вигвам индейцев), he felt a pain in his left foot (он почувствовал боль в своей левой ступне; to feel), and discovered a splinter in the great toe (и обнаружил занозу в большом пальце)! Drawing out the splinter (вытаскивая занозу), he tossed it upward (он бросил ее вверх; upward/s/ — наречие, указывает на "восходящее" направление или изменение) through the smoke-hole of the lodge (через отверстие для дыма в вигваме; lodge — /маленькое помещение, часто — для служебных целей, могущее служить временным пристанищем для кого-л./; домик; сторожка у ворот; палатка индейцев, вигвам). He could hear it roll and rattle down (он мог слышать, как она покатилась и задребезжала вниз) over the birch-bark covering (по крыше, крытой березовой корой; birch — береза; bark — кора), and in the instant (и в /то/ мгновение) that it touched the ground (когда она коснулась земли), there arose the cry of a new-born child (там раздался крик новорожденного ребенка; to arise)!

He-who-was-first-Created (Созданный Первым) at once came forth (сразу же вышел наружу) and took up the infant (и поднял младенца; to take up), who was the Boy Man (который был Юным Человеком: «Мальчик-Человек»), the father of the human race here upon earth (отец человеческой расы здесь на земле).

Now the little Boy Man grew and flourished (ну а маленький Юный Человек рос и развивался: «процветал»), and was perfectly happy (и был полностью счастлив) under the wise guidance of his friend (под мудрым руководством своего друга; to guide — вести, быть чьим-либо проводником; руководить) and Elder Brother (и Старшего Брата). Although he had neither father nor mother (хотя у него не было ни отца, ни матери; neither… nor — ни… ни), and only animals for playmates (и только звери в товарищи по играм; mate — товарищ, партнер), it is said that no child born of human parents (говорят, что ни один ребенок, рожденный человеческими родителями) has ever led so free and happy a life as he (/никогда не/ вел такой свободной и счастливой жизни, как он; to lead). In those days (в те дни = в то время), there was peace between the animals and the Boy Man (был мир между животными и Юным Человеком).

Now the little Boy Man grew and flourished, and was perfectly happy under the wise guidance of his friend and Elder Brother. Sometimes they challenged him to friendly contests (иногда они вызывали его на дружеские поединки: «состязания»), whereupon He-who-was-first-Created taught his little brother (вследствие чего Созданный Первым научил своего маленького брата; to teach; whereupon — после чего; вследствие чего) how to outwit them (как перехитрить их; wit — разум, ум) by clever tricks and devices (умными уловками и обманом/хитростью). This he was often able to do (это ему часто удавалось сделать; to be able to do smth. — суметь что-либо сделать, быть способным что-либо сделать); but not always (но не всегда); for sometimes the animals by their greater strength (так как иногда животные своей превосходящей силой) finally overcame him (в конечном итоге одолевали его; final — конечный, итоговый; finally — в конце концов; to overcome).

He travelled from east to west across the world (он путешествовал с востока на запад через мир = по всему миру), but found no trace of the one (но /не/ нашел ни одного следа того; to find) he sought (/кого/ он искал; to seek), and all of the land creatures (и все земные существа: «и все из земных существ»; land — земля) whom he questioned (кого он спрашивал) declared that they had not seen him pass by (заявляли, что они не видели, чтобы он проходил мимо).
