Chapter Two. The Butler and His Cat

Jenkins, the butler in Madame’s house
Napoleon, his cat
The butler, who had been listening all this time behind the door, tiptoed to his room.
Butler: Wake up, Napoleon, you lazybones. We’ve got work to do. (34)
Napoleon: Miaow?
Butler: What kind of work? Nothing out of the ordinary. (35) We’re going to fool one very nasty old man before he gets too nasty. (36) Madame wants him to hear the great maestro play, and a woman’s wish is my command. (37) Where is that tape recorder?
Napoleon: Mew.
Butler: Ah, thank you. Now listen, Napoleon. Listen carefully. I will go out onto the balcony and pretend to be playing. If you see someone enter the room, just press the “stop” button. Do you understand?
Napoleon: Mew.
Butler: Good. You are a smart cat. The smartest of them all.
Napoleon: Mew.
The butler pressed the “play” button on the tape recorder, and the sounds of beautiful violin music filled the room.

Дворецкий: Просыпайся, Наполеон, лентяй. У нас есть работа.
Наполеон: Мяу?
Дворецкий: Что за работа? Ничего необычного. Нам предстоит обвести вокруг пальца одного очень вредного старикашку, пока он нам окончательно не навредил. Мадам хочет, чтобы он услышал, как играет великий маэстро, а желание женщины для меня закон. Где этот магнитофон?
Наполеон: Мяу.
Дворецкий: А-а, спасибо. А теперь послушай, Наполеон. Слушай внимательно. Я выйду на балкон и притворюсь, будто играю. Если ты увидишь, что кто-то вошел в комнату, нажми клавишу «стоп». Ты понял?
Наполеон: Мяу.
Дворецкий: Хорошо. Ты умный кот. Самый умный из всех.
Наполеон: Мяу.
Дворецкий нажал клавишу «пуск» на магнитофоне, и комната наполнилась звуками прекрасной скрипичной музыки.

Madame: I think that you’re simply jealous, Albert.
Stanton: Well, maybe just a little bit. (38) But it doesn’t change the fact that you don’t know the first thing about the fellow. (39)
Madame: I know that he has no family, no wife, no children. He is all alone in the whole world. His cat, Napoleon, is his only companion. He must feel very lonely.
Stanton: So lonely that you felt pity for him and gave him a job in your house? And now you’re going to include him in your will.
