"Well, I've had a good day and no mistake," said the cabman, with a grin. "What was it you wanted to ask, sir?"
"First of all your name and address, in case I want you again."
"John Clayton, 3, Turpey Street, the Borough. My cab is out of Shipley's Yard, near Waterloo Station."
Sherlock Holmes made a note of it.
"Now, Clayton, tell me all about the fare (теперь, Клэйтон, расскажите мне о пассажире; fare — плата за проезд; пассажир) who came and watched this house at ten o'clock this morning (который наблюдал за этим домом сегодня утром в десять) and afterwards followed the two gentlemen down Regent Street (а затем следовал за двумя джентльменами вниз по Риджент-стрит)."
The man looked surprised and a little embarrassed "Why, there's no good my telling you things (нет смысла рассказывать вам об этом; thing — вещь; факт, обстоятельство), for you seem to know as much as I do already (потому что вы, кажется, уже знаете столько же, сколько и я)," said he. "The truth is that the gentleman told me that he was a detective («правда в том, что» тот джентльмен сказал мне, что он сыщик) and that I was to say nothing about him to anyone (и что я не должен никому о нем рассказывать)."
"My good fellow, this is a very serious business (мой дорогой, это очень серьезное дело), and you may find yourself in a pretty bad position (и вы можете оказаться в довольно неприятном положении) if you try to hide anything from me (если попытаетесь хоть что-то утаить от меня). You say that your fare told you that he was a detective (вы сказали, ваш пассажир сказал, что он сыщик)?"
"Yes, he did (да, он /так сказал/)."
"When did he say this (когда он это сказал)?"
"When he left me (когда уходил; to leave — оставлять; покидать /кого-либо; какое-либо место/)."
"Did he say anything more (он сказал что-нибудь еще)?"
"He mentioned his name (он упомянул свою фамилию)."
Holmes cast a swift glance of triumph at me "Oh, he mentioned his name, did he (о, он упомянул свою фамилию, не так ли)? That was imprudent (это было опрометчиво). What was the name that he mentioned (какую фамилию он назвал)?"
"His name," said the cabman, "was Mr. Sherlock Holmes (его зовут мистер Шерлок Холмс)."

Never have I seen my friend more completely taken aback (никогда я не видел моего друга более ошеломленным; completely — полностью, совершенно) than by the cabman's reply (чем /после/ ответа кебмена). For an instant he sat in silent amazement Then he burst into a hearty laugh (потом от души рассмеялся; to burst — лопаться; внезапно начинать /что-либо/; hearty — сердечный, искренний).
"A touch, Watson — an undeniable touch (удар, Ватсон, неотразимый удар; touch — касание; удар, укол)!" said he. "I feel a foil as quick and supple as my own (я чувствую клинок, такой же быстрый и точный, как мой собственный; foil — фольга; рапира; supple — гибкий). He got home upon me very prettily that time (в этот раз он очень красиво меня провел; to get home — достичь своей цели; одержать победу). So his name was Sherlock Holmes, was it (итак, его звали Шерлок Холмс, не так ли)?"
